The thing about going to bed early is that you tend to wake up early. Like 3:30am early.
Everyone- kids included, was up by 5:30am- without alarms. I think I can say that has NEVER happened.
Mom went for a walk, the twins and I went to grab breakfast, we lost Dan (noticing a theme), and Hayden took his time getting ready.
It was a girls only trip to the USS Arizona Memorial- well worth it.
We then picked a beach on the North Shore to drive to- with a pit stop at the Dole Plantation for some pineapple soft serve.
1st Beach was impossible to park at (Waimea Bay), so we continued to the next: Shark Cove. Great place for tide-pooling! I saw a Zebra Moray Eel- at my feet.
We then headed back to Honolulu to stop at the capital building.
Tried to hit Duke’s for Hula Pie (Dan request) but ended up running out of time and headed to the airport to catch a flight to Kona.
Here’s the thing about rental car returns. When they say the terminal is across the street, have them be specific about WHERE. After touring about 90% of the airport with our luggage we managed to check our bags and get to the gate just in time for boarding.
We landed and grabbed he car to head across the island. We headed into Hilo for dinner - Pineapple Island - good food!
Dan and Miles are working on perfecting their RBF's.
We got to our AirBnb around 10pm, unloaded, then Dan, Mom, and I went into Volcano NP to check out the vents at night - possibly see a glow. The kids crashed - still trying to figure out this time change.
We did not see a glow. There was a lot of wind - a LOT of wind, a surprising number of people for 11pm, and creepy vibe lights along the rim trail.
Today’s Lessons:
1. Ube means sweet potatoes. Not short for ‘Uber Good’. Sweet potato pancakes with sweet potato sauce.
2. The Southwest check-in for inter-island flights is Terminal 2 Lobby 6, contrary to what we read and what we were told.
3. Take the rental car shuttle- they probably know where they are going better than you do.
4. Wild chickens everywhere on Oahu - but mountain goats galore on the Big Island - especially on the sides of the road. At night.
Up Next: Hawaiian Volcano National Park and back to Kona - with some wandering of course.
