Day 4: Luau and Mantas

 Kona, HI

Bit of a lazy morning, Mom and Charlie went to the pool for a few hours (UV was HIGH today), and the boys relaxed in the resort room. Documented some of the wildlife at the resort:

Gecko?

Mongoose?
A plant that looks like a bird

Nope.

We got to the Luau at the Royal Kona Resort early, which was a good thing because there were a LOT of people that ended up there and we ended up with a good table. However, we did think it was odd that they passed the rain policy down the line to make sure everyone read it. We found out why about halfway through the show when it down-poured.

It was about here that they paused the show for the rain. They picked it back up about 20 min later for the fire ending because the rain had slowed a bit. And then it started again so they cancelled and called it a night. We did get to see the fire throwing however!

We went back to the resort, and nobody was feeling like doing the manta ray night snorkel. Kept checking my phone to see if they would cancel due to the rain... they did not. Charlie and Mom had already said they weren't going - they had contemplated just going on the boat but decided not to - before I bought tickets. By 9pm, with everyone in high spirits (that is sarcasm, everyone was snipping at each other), we headed out to the snorkel.
Look at those fake smiles

The boat ride was, my opinion, terrifying: dark ocean and climbing waves - I had the death grip on the bar for the entire 6 miles. But then, I have no words for the next part. 15-20 rays at one point. All of us got buzzed, multiple times. One of the coolest things I have ever done in my life. Photo and video credit to Dan:

Amazing.

Not a fake smile.

Today's Lessons:
1. Do the night snorkel.

2. Don't panic when you hear 'shark' - it was just a foot-long reef shark. But my ass was heading toward the boat regardless.

3. If you need to take a selfie to access your luau pictures, make sure you don't look like a drowned rat as it won't match your face from before it was raining.

4. We do not like poi.

5. The bathrooms after the snorkel are locked for the night, so either go in the water before or be prepared to run into the field.

Happy Anniversary Dan!

Up Next:
Beach? Hayden cooking dinner? We are going to attempt the Mauna Kea summit at sunrise on Wednesday, so I might have to delay posting until after...
